Showit Template Customization vs Fully Custom Design: How to Decide

What is the difference between Showit template customization vs custom design and how do you decide which service is the right option for your business? Keep reading for an honest comparison of the two services, information about pricing and what’s included, and how to choose which of the two services is best.

A Brief Explanation of Each Showit Design Service

Template Customization

We start from an existing Showit template, either one you’ve chosen on your own or one that I’ve helped you find that suits your industry and content. Next, I’ll apply your brand identity strategically throughout the website, make sure your content flows easily with your ideal client’s journey through your sales process in mind, ensure every page is optimized for both desktop and mobile views, and launch your website with accessibility, user experience, and SEO set up properly.  The template serves as a structural blueprint for your content.  The investment in a Showit template customization service at Sophisticated Grace Studio is $3,600 with a project completion time of just 1-3 weeks..

Fully Custom Design

After a deep dive into the inner workings of your business, offers, sales process, and brand identity, I design every aspect of your website from the ground up. Your business is the blueprint with fully custom design, not a template. The investment in fully custom Showit website design is higher than Showit template customization with a longer turnaround time as well: a $6,000 investment with the average project completion time of 4-6 weeks.

The Main Difference is Structure not Quality

A common assumption is that a Showit template customization service is a shortcut or a lower quality end result than fully custom design. A Showit template purchased directly via the Showit design marketplace or through trusted design studios like Tonic and Davey & Krista are thoroughly vetted according to Showit’s team and have followed the best practices for SEO, accessibility, and mobile-responsive design.  Only official Showit Design Partners are allowed to submit templates to the Showit design marketplace and every template is thoroughly reviewed. Templates from design studios like Tonic and Davey & Krista, both established studios that have been official Showit Design Partners for several years, include several pages structured for specific industries as well as copy prompts to help inspire your content, and are designed for conversion from the get-go.

A custom website design isn’t inherently better, it’s more of a strategic control over the structure of a website.  Instead of fitting your content into the predesigned canvases within a template, you have more control and flexibility in how your content is structured according to your unique business.

Showit Template Customization Is The Right Choice If Most Of These Are True

• Your business follows the industry standard as far as packages, pricing, and portfolio.
• Your booking process is straightforward. Someone finds your website, likes your portfolio, fills out your contact form, and schedules a discovery call with you.
• You need a quicker turnaround time: 1-3 weeks instead of 4-6 weeks.
• You stand out more in your niche due to your work, service, or reputation more than your visual brand

If any of these sound like something that fits your business, Showit template customization is the right choice.

Who Should And Shouldn’t Invest In Fully Custom Showit Website Design

You should invest in fully custom Showit website design is most of these are true

• You run several distinct offers that need a separate path through the site and stuffing them all onto one service page won’t do them justice
• Your booking or client process is unique and a standard inquiry form set up won’t fit your business.
• Not standing out in your market costs you money
• Your business has outgrown its previous template customization website
• Your traffic is high enough that even a small conversion improvement pays back dividends

Let’s talk a bit more about that last one for a second. If your website brings in 20 or more inquiries a year at an average project value of $5,000, the increase in investment between a Showit template customization and a fully custom Showit website design service of $2,400 is easily covered with your next inquiry that converts into a paid booking.  If you’re only bringing in 5 inquiries per year, it’s likely not a matter of custom vs templatized structure making a significant difference.

You shouldn’t invest in fully custom Showit website design if these are true

If you can’t clearly define your business in one or two sentences, don’t invest in fully custom Showit website design. Without clarity about your business, offers, ideal clients, etc; the project will stall at the content stage and you’ll end up paying premium rates on a designer that is stuck waiting on your content.

You also shouldn’t invest in fully custom design simply because you think it will make you appear more serious or professional about your business.  The average website visitor won’t be able to tell if your website was built via a template customization or a fully custom design service. What will they be able to tell? If your website loads quickly, is easy to use, and makes the next steps to working with you obvious. All of which can be achieved with either a Showit template customization or a fully custom Showit website design.

If investing $6,000 in a fully custom Showit website will be stretching you thin, you shouldn’t invest in it.  You will likely be fixated on every miniscule decision instead of trusting the designer you hired.

What Both Services Include

Regardless of which service you choose, you are getting the same end result. A website that reflects your business and is mobile-responsive, SEO optimized, accessibility friendly and most importantly, strategically designed to convert visitors into paying clients.

Another option to consider

If you already have a Showit website that is mostly working for your business, investing in a Showit design day would be a good alternative to consider. A Showit Design Day at an $875 investment for a half day or a $1,750 investment for a full day will tackle strategic fixes or improvements and keep your existing Showit website working for you without a full rebuild.

If you’re unsure which of the three services is right for you, book a Signature Website Audit for $375 to help you answer that question.
